How do I choose the right signage substrate?

Most signage disappointment traces back to one decision made too early: the material was chosen from a price list instead of from the environment.

Ask in this order:

  1. Where does it sit? Indoor, outdoor, direct sun, industrial dust, coastal air and washdown areas all behave differently.
  2. How long must it survive? A campaign window and a permanent fascia are not the same product.
  3. Is it lit? Backlit work demands even light diffusion, which changes both the face material and the internal build.
  4. Who maintains it? If nobody will ever clean or service it, specify for that reality.
  5. What is it fixed to? The wall, the height and the wind exposure decide the sub-structure as much as the sign does.

Broadly: flex and vinyl for short-to-medium visibility and large areas; sunboard and acrylic for cleaner indoor work; ACP for durable exterior panels; LED-lit builds where visibility after dark is the point; and heavier fabricated systems where the sign is structural rather than decorative.

How do I plan a multi-location rollout?

The printing is the predictable part. Rollouts fail on coordination.

  • Survey before you specify. Assumed dimensions are the single largest cause of rework across many sites.
  • Freeze the artwork. Version-lock after approval; a late change multiplied by forty locations is a different project.
  • Sequence the launch. Not every site needs to be ready on the same morning — decide which do.
  • Pack by location, not by product. It costs a little more at the dispatch bay and saves a great deal at the site.
  • Define “done”. Installed, photographed, acknowledged. Anything vaguer will be disputed later.
  • Plan for exceptions. Some site will have a locked shutter or a wall that is not what the drawing said. Decide in advance who resolves that.
How should artwork be prepared for large-format printing?

Clean files save a day at the front of the job and prevent colour arguments at the end of it.

  • Work in CMYK for print, and expect screen colour to differ from printed colour — ask for a proof when the brand colour is critical.
  • Scale sensibly. Large-format artwork is often built at a fraction of the final size; state the scale clearly in the file name.
  • Resolution follows viewing distance. A hoarding read from thirty metres does not need the resolution of a business card.
  • Outline your fonts or supply them. Missing fonts are the most common cause of a file being rejected at production.
  • Include bleed and safe area, and keep critical text away from edges, folds and fixing points.
  • Supply layered originals where possible — resizing for another elevation is far easier from an editable file.
What drives the cost of signage?

Two quotations for “the same” sign can differ enormously and both be honest. Usually one of these is different:

  • Substrate grade and thickness — the largest single variable.
  • Print process and ink, and whether it is rated for UV exposure.
  • Sub-structure and fixing — often invisible, and the part that decides whether the sign is still straight in two years.
  • Lighting build quality for backlit and LED work.
  • Finishing and edge treatment.
  • Installation access — height, night work, trading hours, permissions.
  • Logistics — location count, distance, packing and handling.

When comparing quotations, ask each supplier to state substrate, thickness, print process, fixing method and expected service life. Differences become obvious immediately.

Can existing signage be reused instead of reprinted?

Not every renovation needs new signage. Before reprinting, check:

  • Can the existing unit be dismantled without damage and stored?
  • Is the frame or sub-structure still sound, with only the face needing replacement?
  • Can it be resized to the new elevation rather than remade?
  • Has only the logo or a message panel changed, rather than the whole sign?
  • Can the lighting components be recovered and reused?

A supplier who never asks these questions is not necessarily overcharging you — but they are certainly not saving you anything either.

What makes safety signage compliant and durable?

Safety signage has a job to do at the worst possible moment. Specification matters more here than anywhere else.

  • Legibility at distance — sizing follows the distance from which it must be read, not the space available on the wall.
  • Standard colours and symbols — recognition has to be instant and must not depend on reading the text.
  • Environmental tolerance — dust, moisture, heat, vibration and chemical exposure all shorten service life.
  • Visibility in poor light — reflective or lit specifications where the site operates after dark.
  • Fixing that survives the site — including impact and equipment movement nearby.
  • A replacement plan — faded safety signage is arguably worse than none, because it is trusted and no longer legible.
